Meet the Bake-Off Judges: Round 3 with Brian Phillips

Six Indiana college students will walk away with a piece of the $17,000 Bake-Off pie on April 23rd. After surviving 50 days of competition and two elimination rounds, only three teams will pitch their apps in front of an audience comprised of Indiana’s top business-tech leaders, educators, media and more.

When it comes to developing creative strategies for bringing multi-dimensional projects full circle, Brian Phillips has both the answers and experience. Best of all, his art of storytelling will entertain and inspire.

As the Co-Founder and Executive Creative Director of The Basement, a digital design studio that works with brands and agencies to create multi-channel user experiences between mobile, desktop and TV, Brian oversees creative strategy, design and artist development.

We had a quick “Q&A” with Brian so you could get to know him a little better and understand why he is so awesome that we just had to ask him to help judge the 2013 SmartFile Platform Bake-Off.

So, Brian, can you tell us a little bit more about The Basement that we haven’t already mentioned?

The Basement is a collection of experienced illustrators, animators, designers, developers and thinkers. We have a deep understanding of storytelling and interaction design/development and how they apply to end-users. A friend of mine recently described The Basement as a studio that’s “developing in outer space.” I took it as a compliment and feel it’s my responsibility to keep us in orbit.

When thinking about the judging criteria and fundamental tools you feel shape success, what advice can you provide our Bake-Off teams at this point?

Regardless of the outcome, be proud of yourselves for taking the risk. One could argue that’s worth more than money. You’ll have an intimate relationship with your idea. Be prepared. Be genuine.

How do you continue to spark creativity and innovative thinking out of yourself/employees?

I think the ability to listen is the most important quality someone can bring to a team. At the beginning of our projects, we listen! Then we can look for connections between our inspirations and the client’s objectives, and how much risk both parties are willing to take. Somewhere between our inspirations and risk is where you’ll find creativity and innovation. True innovation happens when you stop looking at the world through everyone else’s eyes.

The creative process can be broken down into a series of steps and exercises. Each step allows you to make informed decisions as you progress. Trust your team and trust the process.

On behalf of the entire SmartFile team, we would like to thank Brian for his participation at the 2013 SmartFile Platform Bake-Off! Follow Brian @atomicbigwheel and The Basement @thebasementv on Twitter!
